Chapter Seven

Dare tapped his knuckles against the scholar’s door. While Rage had been busy doing things in the castle, Dare decided to go to the village to find out more about where he came from and who he was. The scholar opened the door and arched an eyebrow.

“You’re here without Master?”

Dare nodded. “I need some answers and he’s busy with other stuff.”

The scholar narrowed his eyes. “Does he know you’re here?”

“Yes.” Dare didn’t exactly tell the whole truth. He had told Rage that he was going out for a run. He didn’t exactly tell him that he wanted to visit the scholar in the village.

“And he let you come?”

Dare laughed. “Yes. Can you help me or not?”

The scholar debated it for a moment before stepping aside and letting him in. The small cottage wasn’t any different than the last time he’d visited. The man could really use a good duster. Dare walked in to the seating area and plopped down on the sofa.

“What can I help you with?”

“I want to know about my family.” The scholar didn’t look pleased. Dare narrowed his eyes. “What do you know?”

“I know many things. None of them are good.”

Dare took a deep breath of the dusty air. “Tell me everything.”

The scholar folded his hands in his lap. “Where do you want me to start?”

“My family. Do you know them? Who are they? What happened?”

The scholar reached over to a side table and poured himself a glass of tea. He offered some to Dare and he declined. “Perhaps I should start even further back. As you know, Gaza is rumored to be a Filios. We have no proof, but he has made claims, then recanted those claims. There is significant reason to believe that he is.”

The scholar took a sip from his tea. “Since he is a Filios, there is a legend that he had all his pack members killed so he could be the supreme wolf. There are very few corresponding stories to defy that, but there is a reasonable amount of logic behind that theory. He’s an evil wolf.. It is not unreasonable to think that he would kill his pack to reign supreme. However, it simply doesn’t make sense that he could kill the life that the Filios possess. There is another option—that he sent them away to another land. That is more plausible than him killing them. However, there is not enough support to suggest that an entire pack would go willingly on his instruction, and there’s no trace of them.”

The scholar paused. “Then there is you.”

Dare swallowed hard. He didn’t know what that meant, but it didn’t sound very good. “What about me?”

The scholar studied him for a moment. “You could be a wolf that was hidden to avoid death. You could be a wolf forgotten when the others were taken to a foreign land. Or you could be Gaza’s son.”

Dare’s eyes widened. “No.”

The scholar drank from his tea. “No? Why not?”

“You really think I could be his son? Really?”

The scholar sat his cup aside.
